ClassPass: Why I Love it & How it Works for Me
ClassPass is a subscription service that allows you to try different fitness studios using credits. It has evolved in the last few years from unlimited plans to credit-based plans. The credits determine how many classes you can take within a month. The price per month varies on your location and how many credits you want to buy. Since I'm in the Bay Area, I've noticed that the prices also vary whether you put San Francisco or San Jose as your location. In San Jose, there are five price tiers you can choose from.
I started my ClassPass journey about two years ago when my friend sent me an invite saying “Hey, take this spin class with me.” After that I was kind of hooked-not to spin classes-but to ClassPass.
I liked the concept of getting to try classes at different fitness studios. I ended up finding my all-time favorite workout class called Megaformer and learned that spin classes weren’t for me. Megaformer is a pilates workout on a machine that looks super intimidating, so I definitely wouldn’t have tried it out without ClassPass.
I’m the kind of person that doesn’t like committing to something before I can try it. Without ClassPass, that would mean I’d have to do my own research on what studios were in my area and then figure out the pricing for a class. ClassPass takes away this process and has all the information there for me from knowing where a studio is located to who my instructor will be. It takes out the overhead that might hinder people like me from trying something new. That’s the core reason I loved it from the beginning. It’s ease of use and on-boarding also makes it a winner for me.
I got injured earlier this year and had to cancel ClassPass for the last 6 months, but now I’m back and here are some the changes that I like.
More plan/pricing options
There were only 3 options when I first joined, and I was grandfathered into a plan that didn’t exist anymore before I canceled. I’m happy to see there are 5 options now even though my old plan isn’t available.
Your Top Picks
You can take a quiz that asks about your experience level, when you want to work out, and some others questions and then ClassPass will recommend you some classes.
I think this is a great addition to their app. This was something that I thought was missing from them. Users still had to scroll or search to find a class they were interested in. This addition is a way for users to try even more classes they might’ve scrolled pass.
Best classes to book right now
Based on your class history, the app lets you know if the credit for a certain class is a “good value.”
Credits needed for a class varies and if you haven’t used the app for long, you won’t know what’s good value for the class you’re taking.
I do have two suggestions for improvement. I think it should be easier to re-book a class you took at the exact same time & day. There is a “Book Again” section, but it usually is the class at a different time or day. Also, I wish the cancel process was easier. There needs to be an option where I don’t need to chat to a customer service agent to cancel. I was injured and needed surgery, so this was the last thing I wanted to do during that time.
With that said, I’m still excited to be back on ClassPass and can’t wait to see what other updates they’ll be making.
